The team at Act Like You Matter cares about your privacy.  We will collect only the personal information that is needed and necessary to process your orders, deliver our products and services, and for other purposes specific to your use of ActLikeYouMatter.org. We will never sell or lend your personal information.

Who we are

We are the 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation Act Like You Matter. Our website address is: https://www.actlikeyoumatter.org. Our mission is to empower young people to find their voice, be part of the solution, and change the way their generation treats each other, so that schools and communities are places of acceptance and tolerance, where empathy and kindness are second nature, and where each child can rise to their full potential without fear of being bullied.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. Please review the Gravatar Service Privacy Policy to learn more. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

ActLikeYouMatter.org uses the external service WooCommerce to power our product pages and shopping cart; sometimes referred to herein as “Our Shopping Cart Service”. We may offer the ability to leave comments on our product pages or write reviews. If you choose to comment or review, the information you write will be stored. Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Any information that you enter into a contact form that is submitted is saved into our website database and is emailed to our customer service team in order to communicate with you via email.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience, so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

Act Like You Matter uses features of Google Analytics. Google Analytics does not store any visitor specific data and we will not use visitor specific data in any way related to Google Analytics. We use this information to better understand our users and do not at this time use any targeted advertising. Statistics such as IP Address, pages visited, demographics, location, and other basic user information is reported for us to better make informed decisions about how to make our site more relevant and easy to navigate for our users. Google offers an opt out installation that works with your browser if you do not want your data reported through Google Analytics: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout/ and we encourage anyone using our site to opt out if they are so inclined.

We also use the third party service Jetpack to provide us with non-user specific information about traffic to and within our website such as:

  • Referrers to our website (for example, if you click a link on a social media site such as Facebook (which would be the “referrer”) and that link brings you to our site
  • What search engine terms brought people to our website (for example, if you typed “anti-bullying script” into Google and clicked through to our website from one of the results that came up)
  • Which pages and posts on our site received the most visitors
  • Which links on our website were clicked by visitors to the site

Payments

We accept offline payments by check and online payments through the third party gateways PayPal and Stripe.

When you mail us a check, it is delivered to a locked PO Box, and no one can access our incoming mail except for our team and the team at the USPS. We physically deposit your check with our bank, and then we never see it again. We do not retain any information regarding your bank, routing number, or account number.

When you pay online through either PayPal or Stripe, information that may shared with these payment providers to process payments includes:

  • Name
  • Email
  • Address
  • Phone
  • City/State/Zip
  • Unique payment identifier
  • Payment provider identifier

When processing payments through PayPal, some of your data will be passed to PayPal, including information required to process or support the payment, such as the purchase total and billing information. Please see the PayPal Privacy Policy for more details.

When you choose to pay on our website with your credit card, the payment processing is handled by the external payment gateway Stripe. Some of your data will be passed to Stripe, including information required to process or support the payment, such as the purchase total and billing information. Data related to browsing and purchasing our products

ActLikeYouMatter.org uses the external service WooCommerce to power our product pages and shopping cart.  If you would like more information than what is covered in this section, please review WooCommerce’s Privacy Policy.  

While you visit our site, we’ll track:

  • Products you’ve viewed: we’ll use this to, for example, show you products you’ve recently viewed
  • Location, IP address, and browser type: we’ll use this for purposes like estimating taxes and shipping, if those are relevant to our products.
  • Shipping address: if relevant to our products, we’ll ask you to enter this so we can, for instance, estimate shipping before you place an order, and send you the order!

We also collect information about you during the checkout process. When you purchase from us, we’ll ask you to provide information including your name, billing address, shipping address (if relevant), email address, phone number, credit card/payment details and optional account information like username and password. We’ll use this information for purposes, such as, to:

  • Send you information about your account and order
  • Respond to your requests, including refunds and complaints
  • Process payments and prevent fraud
  • Set up your account for our store
  • Comply with any legal obligations we have, such as calculating taxes
  • Improve our store offerings
  • Send you marketing messages, if you choose to receive them

If you create an account, we will store your name, address, email and phone number, which will be used to populate the checkout for future orders. You may delete your account at any time.

We generally store information about you for as long as we need the information for the purposes for which we collect and use it, and we are not legally required to continue to keep it. For example, we will store order information for 10 years for tax and accounting purposes. This includes your name, email address, and billing and shipping addresses (if relevant).

Throughout this Privacy Policy, we have described various third party companies we use to help us deliver the best experience for our visitors and customers and to help us improve the performance of our website. In additional to those already mentioned, here are two others:

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Act Like You Matter uses  Akismet anti-spam service. The information they collect includes the commenter’s IP address, user agent, referrer, and Site URL (along with other information directly provided by the commenter such as their name, username, email address, and the comment itself). How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

For users that shop on our site and/or create an account, information about how long we retain that data is covered in the section, “Date related to Browsing and Purchasing our Products” above.

For users who fill out a form on our website, the information they submit is retained for 5 years.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

How we protect your data

Act Like You Matter uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) when finalizing your order or donation. SSL provides strong encryption and security for processing online transactions.
